The 2019 Golden Globe Nominations Are Here

The countdown to awards season has officially begun, with the Golden Globes making the announcements this morning as to they have chosen to be nominated for their awards. There are 25 categories in all, with 5 nominations per category. It was announced yesterday that Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg would be the co-hosts of the 76th annual event, set to air on January 6th, 2019.

This year the film Vice led all nominations with 6. The film hasn’t even hit theatres yet but has garnered a lot of attention for the performances of Christian Bale and Amy Adams. The film is up for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy or Musical, Best Musical or Comedy film, and Best Director. Following close behind were Green Book, The Favourite and A Star Is Born, with five nominations each. On the TV side of things it was The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story leading the way with four nods.

Once again the Golden Globes have created two Best Motion Picture categories, one for Drama and one for Musical / Comedy. And of course once again there will be plenty of debate as to which film belongs where. While Black Panther, BlackKklansman and If Beale Street Could Talk make sense being nominated for Drama, Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born might have made more sense as a Musical. On the flip side of things Crazy Rich Asians, Mary Poppins Returns, The Favourite,  Green Book and Vice make sense as comedies. For acting, several of the nominations for the two categories will probably be repeated for the Oscars later on, including Nicole Kidman for Destroyer, Lady Gaga for A Star Is Born, Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody and Viggo Mortensen for Green Book.

For Television, The Americans, Bodyguard, Homecoming, Killing Eve and Pose will each by vying for the Best Drama Series, and for once there is no real front runner to win. For Best Comedy series Barry, The Good Place, Kidding and The Kominsky Method might have a hard time defeating The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which is on a big role currently. In the acting categories, several big names are on this years list, including Julia Roberts, Sandra Oh (who is also hosting), Jason Bateman, Keri Russell, Elisabeth Moss, Candice Bergen, Jim Carrey and Michael Douglas. In the weeks leading up to the event there is sure to be a lot of debate on who should win in any of the acting categories.
